DARLIN OBANDO ANGULO

Darlin is a 35-year-old Colombian woman, mother of two young children, Ángel (8) and Liam (2), who had to flee their country due to armed conflict. In Colombia, they faced direct threats from groups seeking to extort money (“protection fees”) from their farms and livestock in rural areas. Due to this situation and a previous report to the Colombian police, they were helped to leave the country as a protective measure, as the family was in inherent danger.

For Darlin, leaving behind her home and roots was painful but necessary to safeguard her family. Despite the uncertainty and fear of starting anew in an unfamiliar place, she has strived daily to provide for her children, especially since her former partner decided to leave her for another woman. This event greatly impacted Darlin’s emotional health, leading to episodes of depression and anxiety that hindered her ability to work normally.

Darlin has faced discrimination due to her migrant status and skin color. Despite these barriers, she has found selling candies on the street to be her only source of income to support her family. However, income is so tight that there are days when she cannot gather enough money to buy food.

For Pan de Vida, learning about her case was deeply impactful. We thank God for the opportunity to provide immediate assistance with food, clothing, and medical appointments to detect and treat any health issues. Additionally, we discovered that Darlin did not have her own kitchen and had to borrow from neighbors to prepare meals. In response to this urgent need, we provided a small kitchen, giving her a suitable space to cook. Similarly, she is now part of entrepreneurship training sessions, which have helped her acquire skills and knowledge through mentors, trainers, and other entrepreneurs, enabling her to learn effective strategies to start her own business.

Seeing how Darlin and her family have found spiritual comfort and strength during difficult times has been an immeasurable blessing for us as a foundation. We are deeply grateful to have been part of their journey toward faith and the discovery of God’s presence in their lives.

Darlin’s testimony inspires action and reflection, acknowledging the strength of her resilience where, despite everything, her unconditional love for Ángel and Liam drives her forward, seeking daily opportunities to rebuild a better life.

“The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.” – Psalm 9:9
