ESCOLÁSTICA BAYAS MANOBANDA

Escolástica is 68 years old and lives alone in the Cotocollao neighborhood, in the northern part of Quito. She is a widowed Ecuadorian woman who has spent her entire life working in the fields. Although her body no longer responds the way it used to, she still holds on to her inner strength and the desire to keep moving forward.

She lives in a home built with makeshift materials, without access to running water, electricity, or a bathroom. Her diet is limited, and until recently, she cooked with firewood in an enclosed space, which filled her home with smoke and seriously affected her lungs.

Emotionally, she has gone through painful times. The loss of one of her daughters, who used to be the most attentive to her, has deeply affected her and made her feel even more alone at this stage of her life. While she still feels the love of her other children, they also face economic hardships and are not always able to support her.

Escolástica survives on just $40 a month, which she earns by taking care of a plot of land where she can grow a few things for her own consumption. She does not receive a pension and has very limited access to healthcare. Despite so many challenges, she remains grateful for what little she has and for the people around her.

Since April 2025, Pan de Vida has walked alongside her, providing food kits, personal hygiene kits, and a spot every Sunday in our hot meal program. We were also able to give her a stove and a gas tank, which have made a significant difference in her daily routine, allowing her to cook in a safer and healthier way.

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2)

We invite you to continue walking alongside people like Escolástica—from wherever you are—with your prayers, your time, or your generosity.
