Behind every business born at Pan de Vida there is a story of courage, and Silvia’s is one of the ones that inspires us most: the story of a mother who, in the middle of uncertainty, chose to believe that a new beginning was possible.
Silvia is a single mother of two children. Her eldest daughter lives with a disability that requires constant care and attention, and her younger son is of school age. For years, family life revolved around that care, and Silvia depended financially on her partner. A little over a year ago, that reality changed from one moment to the next: after the separation, she became the sole provider for her household, without formal employment and with the responsibility of raising her children entirely on her own. The need to always be available to care for her daughter made it even harder to join the workforce, and over time the family’s financial situation became critical—to the point that she had to move into her parents’ home in order to support her family. It was a hard period, both financially and emotionally, but even then Silvia never let go of one certainty that held her up: that she is a daughter of God, and that He has good plans for her.
In that moment of need, Silvia turned to the Pan de Vida Foundation seeking support, and there she found more than one-time help: a community willing to walk alongside her and an opportunity to build her own path. She joined our microentrepreneurship program, a training designed to help each participant discover their potential and learn to turn an idea into a real business. Saturday after Saturday she gained new tools—an entrepreneurial mindset, how to shape and validate an idea, how to understand her customers and sell, how to manage finances and promote her business—and in that process she rediscovered a talent of her own and turned it into opportunity: creating hair accessories. At the close of the program she presented her business in our Shark Tank, where participants showcase their projects, and she earned second place. That recognition was far more than a prize: it was confirmation that her effort was bearing fruit.
Today Silvia has her own hair accessories business, one she created herself and that supports her family. With each piece she makes, she not only earns an income but also reclaims her independence, her confidence, and the assurance that she can move forward by her own means. She went from depending financially on someone else to being the one who provides for her home, and that change—from uncertainty to self-sufficiency—is the heart of her story of perseverance. Her business keeps growing day by day, and she is happy: happy with her business, with the way things are flowing, and above all with the certainty that what she trusted in became reality. Her faith not only sustained her in the hardest moment; today it has taken concrete form in a business of her own and in a future that is once again in her hands.
Her testimony is a powerful example that, with faith, determination, and the right tools, it is always possible to begin again.
