Hohana is a 26-year-old single mother who takes care of her four young children and has had to overcome very difficult situations. Not only were her family survivors of the flood in Gasca, Ecuador; but she has also had to take care of her children on her own, since her ex-partner had no intention of helping her and the family. For Hohana, being a single mother is a great act of courage; but raising a family and maintaining the household needs has also caused her frustration, loneliness, anxiety, and tears. She withstands the daily struggle to continue forming a path for her children.
Hohana is a dedicated worker at her recycling job, however, she takes her 2-month-old baby to work with her because she doesn’t have anyone to take care of her (which exposes the baby to many diseases). Likewise, while Hohana goes to work, her 10-year-old daughter, Britany, feeds and takes care of her three younger brothers. Although it is overwhelming for Hohana to leave her children alone, she must do it to work and provide her children with food and an education.
Hohana came to Pan de Vida in October of 2023 due to her lack of economic resources which prohibited her from meeting her family’s basic needs; especially since there was less opportunity for her recycling job, and she didn’t have enough money to pay her expenses. Ever since she became part of Pan de Vida, she has received help in different areas: food supply (voucher deliveries and warm meals), health (medical attention), as well as diapers and donated clothes. Her youngest child was born two months ago and was declared underweight and undersized. Because of this urgent situation, it was crucial that the baby drink formula to regain its health.
On the other hand, the family has also learned more about God and has grown more in His word through the teachings of the Bible. Hohana feels truly grateful that Pan de Vida has given her these opportunities and reaffirmed that God is with her and her family––offering them guidance and comfort in various ways. She is now certain that God is always with her and is always showing us his great love.
